Some Frequently Asked Questions:

What program do you use to create the site? Or do you write code, or both? Would you create the site so that I could upload my own images in the future, add pages, etc?

A: I create my websites in Dreamweaver.  It writes most of the code for me, though I do have to use some code to make some alterations, etc.  I add a CSS stylesheet which controls the appearance of things such as the colors, sizes, and styles of font (for headers, paragraphs, subtitles, links, etc) as well as background colors, etc.  The advantage of this is that if you ever want to change the look of your site (change background colors or fonts), you only need to change it on the css stylesheet, which will affect the entire site.  I create sites that are pretty easy to update yourself because you can just plug new images into the pages.  I can give you directions for this.  If you have above basic computer skills, I can meet for a tutoring session. In some cases, I might even be able to teach you how to do this over the phone. 

Q: If I decided that I wanted to begin shortly, how long do you imagine it would be before my site would go live?

A: Usually I can have a site created within 2-3 weeks, depending on factors such as how clear the collaboration process goes, and how busy I am with other sites.  If we are pretty clear from the outset, and if I have all of the files needed (images, text copy), it usually goes pretty fast. 

Q: Are there things that I could do myself, to minimize the work that you would need to do, and thereby keeping the cost down?

A: It's helpful if you have Photoshop or another image-authoring software so that you can resize photos before you send them to me.  Usually clients send them as they come off from their camera, which are often high resolution.  So that the images download quickly, I resize images so that they are 72 dpi, with the longest side of the picture no more than 8 or 9 inches (larger than this would bleed off the edges of most people's screen).  That's the pop-up size.  Then I size each down to a thumbnail size as well.  I can do this fairly quickly, though.. so if you are unfamiliar with Photoshop it's probably less of a problem to let me do the resizing. But if that's something easy for you to do, I can knock some cost off of the bid.

Q: What's the process of creating an aesthetic that appeals to me? Do you send a few ideas/pages and we collaborate from there? Please let me know how this would evolve.

A: First, I like to see examples of other sites you like. We can combine features from different sites, if you wish. It helps if you have some ideas regarding what colors you want on your site.  If you can give me the perameters of background colors, font style and colors, etc... it takes a lot of the guesswork out of the equation.  We can try a few different schemes and I can send them to you in test pages.  You let me know which direction to go as it evolves.  There's a lot of back and forth collaboration.  Most of this can be done by email, though it's great to have a few phone conversations as the work progresses too.

Q: What form of payments do you accept?

A: I can accept cash, check, or charge in the form of a Paypal payment. Once we've discussed your needs we can either work from a bid, or in form of installments until the work is complete. I will send you an invoice via email or mail. If you select to pay through Paypal, I'll send you an invoice from my Paypal account.
